Shooting Incident in Tayum: 1 Dead, 1 Injured in Clash of Political Groups

Tayum: A shooting incident between the groups of a mayoral candidate and a municipal councilor left one person dead and another wounded in Tayum, Abra. The conflict unfolded on Monday as tensions escalated between the political factions.

According to Philippines News Agency, Abra Police Provincial Office Director, Col. Froiland Lopez, in a phone interview with reporters at Camp Crame on Tuesday, identified the fatality as Jay-ar Tanura. The injured individual was named as Jordan Calaustro Barcena. Both Tanura and Barcena were traveling in a convoy with mayoral candidate Kathlia Cari±o Alcantara, along with Barangay Budac chairman Ryan Luna and Raffy Tejero, who were campaigning in Sitio Agdamay in Barangay Budac, Tayum.

Witnesses reported that Luna and Tejero initiated the gunfire directed at the convoy of municipal councilor Walter Tugadi. This prompted a concerned citizen to alert the Tayum municipal police station about the ongoing shooting incident.

"Our personnel are always on alert so we are expecting that to happen knowing election na naman, pag election ng Abra (every election in Abra)," Lopez stated, highlighting the preparedness of local law enforcement during election periods. He further mentioned that charges of homicide and violation of the election gun ban would be filed against those involved in the incident, categorizing it as 'election-related.'
