Singapore Prime Minister Commends Philippines’ Economic Milestone and Celebrates Eala’s Wimbledon Success

Singapore: Singapore Prime Minister Lawrence Wong has extended his congratulations to President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. on the Philippines' recent elevation to upper-middle-income country status, marking a significant milestone amid the global economic challenges.

According to Philippines News Agency, the meeting between Marcos and Wong took place at the Istana in Singapore as part of Marcos' working visit aimed at strengthening ties with a key partner in Southeast Asia. On Thursday, Palace Press Officer Claire Castro briefed the media, stating that Prime Minister Wong acknowledged the Philippines' economic progress and conveyed his optimism regarding the nation's continued development.

During their discussion, Wong described the Philippines' achievement as a "respectable growth" milestone, highlighting the country's steady development despite the global uncertainties, including the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.

In addition to economic discussions, Prime Minister Wong also lauded the Philippines and Filipino tennis star Alex Eala for her historic achievement at Wimbledon. Wong expressed hope that Eala could become the first Southeast Asian player to clinch a Grand Slam title at the prestigious tournament, recognizing her as a source of pride for both the Philippines and Southeast Asia.

Castro further noted that both leaders shared admiration for Eala's success, acknowledging the pride it brings to the region. The meeting also covered discussions on expanding trade, promoting investments, advancing cooperation in artificial intelligence, and strengthening collaboration in health and social development.

Furthermore, Marcos and Wong reaffirmed their commitment to exploring new bilateral agreements and ensuring peace, stability, and prosperity within the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). Singapore is set to host the ASEAN Summit next year, following the Philippines' hosting.
