Solon calls Alejano ‘whiner’ for remark over Duterte HK visit

MANILA A party-list lawmaker on Thursday slammed Magdalo Rep. Gary Alejano for his remark that President Rodrigo R. Duterte's visit to Hong Kong was a wasteful personal junket that achieved nothing.

In a statement, ACTS-OFW Rep. Aniceto Bertiz III described Alejano as a "publicity seeker" and a "whiner" who wants to get greater media mileage over his rants against the President.

We cannot avoid grandstanding nitpickers who always try to find fault, however petty, everywhere they look, Bertiz said.

The way we see it, these whiners are actually the ones trying to draw attention to themselves. The President is a natural media magnet wherever he goes, even abroad. He does not need gimmicks, he added.

Bertiz urged Duterte to visit Hong Kong again to pay tribute and encourage the 190,000 Filipino domestic workers there who send home an average of USD830 million, or PHP43.16 billion, every year.

Actually, USD830 million is an understated figure, because it covers only remittances through banks, and many Filipino domestic workers in Hong Kong send money to their families here via informal channels, such as (by way of) other workers who come home for vacations, Bertiz said.

Duterte addressed more than 2,000 mostly Filipino domestic workers in Hong Kong after attending The Boao Forum for Asia conference in Hainan Province in mainland China.

Bertiz said Duterte's trip to mainland China provided an "excellent opportunity for him to drop by and lend moral support to Filipinos in the autonomous Chinese territory."

Our workers in Hong Kong have long been wishing for the President to visit, Bertiz said.

Malapit din talaga sa puso ng ating Pangulo ang mga overseas workers natin nasaan man sila. Kaya naman ang Pangulo mismo ay gumagawa talaga ng paraan para makita at makausap sila (Our overseas workers are close to the President's heart no matter where they are. That's why the President is doing everything to meet and talk to them), Bertiz said. (PNA)
