Manila: 1Tahanan Party-list Rep. Nathaniel Oducado has filed a resolution commending the Maritime Industry Authority (MARINA) and Philippine Maritime Attach© Sharon De Chavez-Aledo for securing the chairmanship of the Sub-Committee on Human Element, Training and Watchkeeping (HTW) of the International Maritime Organization (IMO).
According to Philippines News Agency, Resolution No. 991 highlights the critical role of the HTW Sub-Committee in formulating global standards on seafarer training, certification, and watchkeeping. These standards directly impact maritime safety and the welfare of seafarers worldwide.
The resolution notes that De Chavez-Aledo's victory, achieved with 53 votes against the United States' candidate who received 37 votes, marks a significant triumph for the Philippines on the international stage.
The achievement is attributed to the 'combined efforts of dedicated public servants of MARINA and the Philippine Embassy in London,' with active support and leadership from Ambassador Teodoro Locsin Jr. This victory underscores the Philippines' capacity to lead in the maritime sector.
Rep. Oducado emphasized the importance of this achievement during a time of scandal and economic hardship, stating, "This reminds us that the Filipino can lead - not just endure." He recalled the European Union's 2022 threat to ban Filipino seafarers, noting that in less than five years, the Philippines has demonstrated its qualifications not only to serve but to lead and set standards.
The resolution calls on the House of Representatives to officially recognize this achievement and to reaffirm the country's commitment to maritime excellence and the welfare of Filipino seafarers.
