Manila: Newly elected Senate President Vicente 'Tito' Sotto III on Tuesday said the reorganization of the chamber's leadership was carried out to protect the institution's integrity and allow senators facing allegations to address them outside the Senate.
According to Philippines News Agency, Sotto explained in an interview with ABS-CBN News Channel's Headstart that he and four other senators initiated the changes in the Senate leadership to maintain the chamber's reputation. Sotto emphasized that when leaders are criticized, the entire Senate comes under scrutiny, prompting the need for this strategic move.
He further elaborated that controversies involving individual senators often tarnish the image of the whole chamber. Sotto expressed concern that allegations against even one senator could affect the Senate's integrity.
Sotto recounted a meeting with former Senate President Francis Escudero, where he and four colleagues discussed the resolution behind the leadership change. Escudero, along with Senator Joel Villanueva, was informed about the reorganization, which Sotto described as being well-received by Escudero.
In addition to the leadership restructuring, Sotto confirmed that discussions also took place regarding key committee posts, such as the Blue Ribbon and finance panels, ensuring that capable members are assigned to handle the Senate's investigative and budgetary responsibilities.
