South Korea Aims to Deliver Initial Batch of Fighter Jets to Philippines by 2028

Makati city: South Korea is aiming to deliver the first three out of twelve FA-50 Block 70 light combat aircraft to the Philippines before the end of President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.'s term in 2028, as announced by South Korean Ambassador to the Philippines Lee Sang-hwa on Tuesday. This development marks a significant step in enhancing the Philippines' air defense capabilities.

According to Philippines News Agency, the Philippines finalized a USD700 million contract last month to procure the 12 fighter jets from Korea Aerospace Industries, Ltd. (KAI). Ambassador Lee emphasized the importance of this acquisition, stating that the additional purchase would significantly improve the capabilities of the Philippine Air Force. He confirmed that the first batch of jets is expected to be delivered by the end of the Marcos administration.

The purchase includes a comprehensive package featuring mission equipment, integrated logistics support, and a training and logistics information system. The FA-50 Block 70 represents the latest advancement in the FA-50 platform, equipped with advanced avionics, modern radar systems, and an extended operational range. The delivery of these aircraft will occur in phases over the next five years, with full completion anticipated by 2030.

The defense cooperation between South Korea and the Philippines has been strengthened, with both nations upgrading their partnership to a 'strategic' level in October 2024. In addition to the fighter jets, the Philippines recently acquired the BRP Miguel Malvar (FFG06), constructed by South Korea's Hyundai Heavy Industries.

In light of global instability, Ambassador Lee assured the Filipino people that South Korea remains a dependable partner. He highlighted the shared interests of both maritime nations in maintaining peace and stability and supporting a rules-based order in the South China Sea and beyond.
