SRA Evacuates Research Facility Following Kanlaon Volcano Eruption

La Carlota City: The Sugar Regulatory Administration (SRA) has evacuated its research facility, the La Granja Agricultural Research and Extension Center (LGAREC), in La Carlota City, Negros Occidental, due to the explosive eruption of Kanlaon Volcano.

According to Philippines News Agency, Barangay La Granja is one of the villages directly impacted by ashfall, as reported by the city government. SRA Administrator Pablo Luis Azcona announced the evacuation of the research facility, leaving a skeleton crew to secure the site. Azcona stated that all vehicles are ready to assist local government units if required.

The LGAREC facility employs 227 individuals, including 187 facility staff and 40 field workers, with the skeletal force consisting of approximately 20 personnel, mainly security guards. Azcona emphasized that the SRA has activated its Disaster Response Team, led by Board Member David Andrew Sanson, to ensure the safety of employees.

Sanson mentioned that the disaster response teams have been reconvened and are actively monitoring the situation at Mt. Kanlaon. He indicated that relief supplies are prepared and a budget of PHP4 million has been allocated for additional emergency provisions.

A memorandum from Azcona stated that the SRA Bacolod will serve as a temporary shelter for SRA Visayas employees and contract personnel if the situation worsens, rendering nearby areas unsafe. The SRA is consistently coordinating with authorities to receive updates on the volcano's activity.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology reported in its eruption bulletin that Alert Level 3, indicating magmatic unrest, remains over Mt. Kanlaon. The bulletin warned that the morning's explosive eruption could be followed by similar short-lived eruptions or escalate to lava flows and lava fountaining activity.
