Surigao del sur: The Sangguniang Panlalawigan of Surigao del Sur declared the entire province under a state of calamity following the destruction caused by Tropical Storm Basyang.
According to Philippines News Agency, the provincial board's Resolution 762-26 highlighted that 52.44 percent of the province's population, equating to 89,816 families or 336,671 individuals, were affected by the storm across 249 barangays in 19 municipalities. Among these residents, 30 percent, or 101,324 individuals, were displaced and are currently seeking refuge in evacuation centers or with relatives and friends.
The resolution noted the occurrence of fast-rising floods and strong currents, leading to landslides and soil erosion. These incidents have obstructed several critical road sections, affecting the movement of commuters, motorists, and commercial vehicles. Blocked roads were predominantly reported in Cantilan, Madrid, Lanuza, Cortes, Tandag City, Tago, San Miguel, and Bayabas.
The report also confirmed the tragic deaths of a 10-year-old child in a landslide in Cortes and a 53-year-old woman who was carried away by floodwaters in Carmen town. Furthermore, the province suffered PHP1.4 billion in damages to essential infrastructure, residences, roads, tourism, and the agriculture and fisheries sectors.
The declaration of a state of calamity, as stated under Republic Act 10121, or the Philippine Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Act of 2010, is expected to facilitate remedial actions and expedite relief and rehabilitation efforts by the provincial government. Governor Johnny Pimentel expressed support for the provincial board's decision, emphasizing that it would accelerate relief efforts and ensure that aid reaches those most in need.
