Manila: The city government of Tacloban and other areas in Eastern Visayas have ordered the suspension of classes at all levels and work in government offices starting Friday afternoon. This decision comes in response to the magnitude 7.4 earthquake that struck off the coast of Manay, Davao Oriental.
According to Philippines News Agency, Mayor Alfred Romualdez issued Executive Order No. 2025-10-57, declaring the suspension as a precautionary measure. Although tsunami warnings have been terminated as of the latest updates, the action aims to prioritize public safety and preparedness. Mayor Remedios Petilla of Palo, a nearby town that hosts the Government Center with various regional and provincial offices, also enacted a similar suspension.
Mayor Romualdez has instructed all city government departments, in collaboration with the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office and barangay officials, to conduct preemptive evacuations, enhance monitoring of coastal areas, and ensure the timely dissemination of information to at-risk communities. The executive order emphasizes the importance of these measures for public safety and to allow families the necessary time to prepare and evacuate if needed.
The earthquake occurred at 9:43 a.m., leading the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology to initially issue a tsunami warning for the country's eastern seaboard.
