Tahanang Walang Hagdanan Transforms PWD Lives in Vigan

Vigan:Jake Smith, born with a congenital lower-limb difference in Sallapadan, Abra, found new hope at the age of 12 when he discovered Tahanang Walang Hagdanan (THD) in Vigan City, Ilocos Sur.

According to Philippines News Agency, Smith initially faced difficulties due to the lack of accessible facilities, which limited his use of a wheelchair. However, the introduction to THD marked the beginning of a transformative journey for him and other persons with disabilities (PWDs) in Ilocos Sur. They now engage in a one-stop-shop business, producing and selling handcrafted items to sustain their needs.

Founded by Fr. Bernhard Raas, a Catholic missionary priest, THD provides PWDs with education and employment opportunities. Edgar Dela Cruz, head of Vigan's City Cultural Affairs and Tourism Office, explained that PWDs receive free training and start-up capital for livelihood opportunities.

Skills training and livelihood programs help PWDs acquire competencies, explore employment opportunities, and develop their capacity to earn a living. These initiatives also foster a sense of belonging and purpose, allowing beneficiaries to recognize their worth and actively participate in their communities.

The Department of Tourism (DOT) and the Department of Trade and Industry in Ilocos Region organized a creative tour that included a visit to THD, showcasing the creativity and craftsmanship of PWDs. Gaye Acacio, DOT-Region 1 Chief Tourism Officer, highlighted that purchasing souvenirs from THD supports the livelihood of PWDs.

PWDs expressed that being part of Tahanang Walang Hagdanan has opened doors to opportunities they once thought were beyond their reach.
