Talisay city: More qualified Negrenses have availed of the PHP20-per-kg. rice in Negros Occidental through the 'Bigasan ng Bayan' of the provincial government and the Federation of Irrigators' Association of Central Negros - Bago River Irrigation System (FIACN-BRIS). On Friday, about 500 beneficiaries in Talisay City were able to buy 5 kg. of quality rice each for only PHP100.
According to Philippines News Agency, FIACN-BRIS president Pedro Limpangog expressed that they welcome another opportunity to sell rice at a more affordable price in the city just north of Bacolod. This follows the launch of the PHP20-per-kg. rice in Pulupandan town in southern Negros last month. Limpangog noted that those who participated were pleased with their purchases, and Mayor Rowena Lizares expressed gratitude for bringing the Bigasan ng Bayan to Talisay City.
The 2,500 kg. of rice sold originated from the palay production of a farmer, who is also an irrigation association leader from Barangay Mabini, Valladolid town. Eligibility to purchase the rice included senior citizens, persons with disabilities, solo parents, and beneficiaries of the Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program. The purchase was made at the Bigasan ng Bayan set up in the Talisay City public plaza.
Limpangog stated that the Bigasan ng Bayan aligns with the 'Benteng Bigas, Meron (BBM) Na!' program of the national government. He emphasized that this initiative is part of the province's ongoing commitment to food security and public service, ensuring that essential goods remain accessible to those who need them most.
The provincial government collaborates with FIACN-BRIS, under the National Irrigation Administration - Negros Occidental Irrigation Management Office, for its Dagyaw Project aimed at producing high-yield rice at a lower production cost.
