Tarriela to Address Carlos’ Cyberlibel Complaint Once Notified by NBI

Manila:Philippine Coast Guard spokesperson for the West Philippine Sea, Rear Adm. Jay Tarriela, announced he will respond to the cyberlibel complaint filed by former National Security Adviser Clarita Carlos through the appropriate legal channels once he receives official notification from the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI).

According to Philippines News Agency, Tarriela stated that he has not yet received any formal summons or notice regarding the complaint and was only informed of its existence through media reports. He expressed confidence in the NBI's professionalism and processes.

The complaint was lodged by Carlos on October 23 against Tarriela and Philippine Military Academy superintendent Lt. Gen. Michael Logico. NBI Director Melvin Matibag confirmed the filing, mentioning that the bureau will be reaching out to the officials to hear their perspectives.

The situation stems from Tarriela's October 22 statement criticizing Carlos for not adequately defending the country's interests in the West Philippine Sea during her time as National Security Adviser. This came after Carlos had defended controversial remarks made by Chinese Ambassador to Manila Jing Quan about Beijing's military superiority over the Philippines, in an interview with One News' Morning Matters on October 21. Carlos had also strongly criticized Tarriela during the interview, asserting that foreign policy should be managed by the President and the Department of Foreign Affairs.
