Manila: Team Philippines has achieved remarkable success at the Thailand International Mathematical Olympiad (TIMO), securing three world stars during the final round held in Chiang Mai, Thailand, from February 21 to 24, 2025.
According to Philippines News Agency, the Math Olympiads Training League Inc. (MOTLI) announced in a social media post that Brian Jansen Vallejo from Sarrat National High School, Yleisha Neil Sumo from General Emilio Aguinaldo National High School, and Achillas Maximus Cristobal from Operation Brotherhood Montessori Center excelled in the competition. These students have been recognized for their outstanding mathematical abilities and have brought honor to their schools and country.
While returning to the Philippines, Coach Michael Malvar shared with the Philippine News Agency that Vallejo not only earned a world star but also received the world champion award, along with a gold medal, as well as the prestigious Leibniz and Pascal awards during the same event. Malvar emphasized the dedication and passion of the students, urging them to continue setting high standards for future competitions.
A total of 18 countries, including the Philippines, Thailand, Australia, Brazil, Canada, Saudi Arabia, Sri Lanka, Singapore, Vietnam, Myanmar, Cambodia, Malaysia, Indonesia, Hong Kong, Bulgaria, and India participated in the TIMO Finals. This competition serves as a qualifying stage for the World International Mathematical Olympiad (WIMO) 2025, scheduled for January 2026.
Sarrat National High School emerged with a significant haul of accolades, winning one world champion title, one world first runner-up, four gold medals, one silver medal, two merit awards, and six perfect score awards. Vallejo, along with teammates Allen Iver Barroga, Natalie Margaret Balisacan, Zyrene Angelica Dulluog, Jushiem Barrog, Cyrus Dwayne Salibio, and Ivy Fiona Lagua, contributed to this impressive achievement.
The TIMO Finals recognize exceptional skills in various mathematical disciplines, with awards such as the Boole award for logical thinking, Euler award for number theory, Leibniz award for algebra, Euclid award for geometry, and Pascal award for combinatorics.
