Thai Supreme Court Enforces One-Year Prison Sentence for Ex-PM Thaksin Shinawatra

Thailand: Thailand's Supreme Court has mandated that former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra serve a one-year prison term following convictions related to corruption and abuse of power. This decision was reported by the Thai Public Broadcasting Service.

According to Philippines News Agency, Thaksin, who was ousted from his role as Prime Minister in a 2006 military coup, had spent several years in self-imposed exile, mostly in Dubai. Upon his return to Thailand in 2023, he was swiftly tried and found guilty of corruption and abuse of power during his time in office, initially receiving an eight-year prison sentence.

After Thaksin sought a royal pardon, the Thai king reduced his sentence to one year. However, shortly after entering prison, Thaksin was moved to the Police General Hospital due to reported health issues, where he remained for six months. Following this period, he was granted parole and allowed to return to his residence in Bangkok. The recent legal scrutiny involved questions regarding the legitimacy of his hospital transfer and the authenticity of his health claims.
