KUALA LUMPUR, Former group chief editor of The Star Datuk Ng Poh Tip has died at the age of 81. The Star's chief content officer, Datin Paduka Esther Ng Sek Yee, when contacted by Bernama, said Ng died at her home in Subang Jaya, near here. Ng, whose husband died 10 years ago, has no children. She started her career as a journalist in 1971 and made history as the country's first female group chief editor when she was appointed to the post at The Star in 1993, where she served until 2003. Ng graduated with a Bachelor of Arts (Hons) degree majoring in History from Universiti Malaya in 1967 and a Master of Arts in Political Studies from the University of Guelph, Canada, in 1971. Meanwhile, The Star's former group chief editor Michael Aeria was quoted by the publication as saying today that Ng had not been well for a long time and had suffered two strokes before. He said she had been warded in the intensive care unit for more than a week. Bernama chairman Datuk Seri Wong Chun Wai, who is also Star Media Gr oup Bhd adviser, credited Ng with accepting him to rejoin The Star after he left the newspaper in 1980. "I had left The Star in 1980 and completed my university studies in 1984, and Ng had asked me to return to The Star the day after I sat for my final exams," he told Bernama.
