Quezon city: Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Gen. Nicolas Torre III on Monday welcomed the National Police Commission's (Napolcom) suggestion to elevate the police force's Air Unit to the national support status.
According to Philippines News Agency, Torre expressed appreciation for the proposal put forth by Napolcom Vice Chairperson and Executive Officer Atty. Rafael Vicente R. Calinisans. He acknowledged that the administration and operation of the PNP are under Napolcom's jurisdiction and highlighted the importance of studying the cost-benefit ratio of the proposed move.
Torre mentioned the importance of evaluating the actual cost implications of maintaining the air unit with national support status. He noted that the annual cost of hangars has surged from PHP1.9 million to PHP24 million due to various factors, emphasizing the need for careful financial consideration.
Calinisan had previously indicated that Napolcom is prepared to pass a formal resolution, if necessary, to support the modernization and operational needs of the PNP air unit. He underscored the unit's critical role in rapid deployment, aerial surveillance, disaster response, and search and rescue operations, advocating for its elevation to a full-fledged national support unit.
He further emphasized the necessity of enhancing the unit's logistical and operational capacities to meet the increasing demands of law enforcement, particularly during natural calamities and critical security missions.
