Manila: Tropical Storm Hagupit, internationally known by the same name, is advancing westward across the sea south of Guam and is anticipated to enter the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) over the weekend, as reported by the weather bureau on Thursday. In its 5 a.m. advisory, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) detailed that as of 4 a.m., the storm's center was approximately 1,995 km east of northeastern Mindanao. According to Philippines News Agency, the storm is traveling at a speed of 20 kph with maximum sustained winds reaching 65 kph near its center and gustiness up to 80 kph. PAGASA predicts that Hagupit will maintain its westward trajectory for the next six hours before veering west-northwestward for the remainder of the forecast period. The storm is expected to enter the PAR between Saturday evening and Sunday morning, at which point it will be renamed Caloy. PAGASA further stated that Hagupit is likely to intensify into a high-end tropica l storm but will subsequently weaken, possibly downgrading to a tropical depression by Tuesday as it traverses the Philippine Sea. The weather bureau also noted that Hagupit is unlikely to have a direct impact on weather and sea conditions within the next three days. In addition to monitoring Hagupit, PAGASA observed a low-pressure area (LPA) advancing east of Hinatuan, Surigao del Sur. Although this LPA is not anticipated to evolve into a tropical depression, it is forecast to bring scattered rains and thunderstorms to regions including Central Visayas, Eastern Visayas, Negros Island Region, Caraga, Northern Mindanao, Davao Region, and Zamboanga Peninsula. Metro Manila and other parts of the country can expect partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rain showers or thunderstorms. PAGASA has issued warnings for potential flash floods or landslides, particularly in areas experiencing moderate to heavy rains due to the LPA and severe thunderstorms caused by the easterlies.
