Trough of LPA Dampens Caraga, LGUs Suspend Classes

Butuan city: Moderate to heavy rains caused by the trough of the Low-Pressure Area (LPA) continue to affect most parts of the Caraga Region from Sunday afternoon until Monday. A rainfall warning issued by the state weather bureau at 5 a.m. Monday placed Agusan del Sur, Surigao del Sur, Agusan del Norte, Dinagat Islands, and Surigao del Norte under a Yellow Warning level for possible flooding and landslides. To ensure the safety of students and teachers, local government units (LGUs) have ordered the suspension of classes in the area. According to Philippines News Agency, the LGUs that have ordered class suspensions included the towns of San Miguel, Cortes, Lianga, Carrascal, Bislig City, and Tandag City in Surigao del Sur; Placer, Bacuag, Tagana-an, and San Francisco in Surigao del Norte; San Francisco, Sibagat, Bayugan City, Talacogon, Sta. Josefa, La Paz, and San Luis in Agusan del Sur; and San Jose in Dinagat Islands. Work suspensions were also ordered in San Miguel, Surigao del Sur, and at the Provincial Capitol in Dinagat Islands. Meanwhile, the regional office of the National Irrigation Administration (NIA-13) continues to monitor the water levels of all irrigation systems in the region. As of 7:30 a.m., the NIA-13 reported that the water level at the Gibong River Irrigation System in Poblacion Prosperidad, Agusan del Sur, is 50.30 meters, approaching the critical level of 50.50 meters. A rising water level was also recorded at 7:34 a.m. at the Tago River Irrigation System in Barangay Sagbayan, San Miguel, Surigao del Sur, reaching 21.30 meters and nearing the 23.00-meter critical level. 'We advise the public, farmers, and stakeholders near the area to stay updated and remain alert, especially due to the continuous rainy weather caused by the trough of the LPA,' the NIA-13 said.
