Trump’s America First Agenda Marks Return to White House

Washington: Donald Trump took office as the United States' 47th president on Monday, renewing his vow to "put America first" and tariff foreign countries to enrich Americans, while signaling an intent to refrain from military involvement in conflicts overseas. During his swearing-in ceremony in the Capitol Rotunda in Washington, Trump, 78, underscored his America First credo as his second four-year term is expected to see a major shift in the U.S. approach to alliances, trade, and other key issues. Vice President J.D. Vance was also sworn in.

According to Philippines News Agency, Trump emphasized the beginning of a "golden age" for America, promising a nation that will flourish and be respected globally. His inaugural address, delivered after taking the oath of office, highlighted his administration's commitment to prioritize American interests. Trump outlined plans to build the "strongest military" while expressing a desire to end wars abroad and avoid foreign conflicts, suggesting his agenda might lean towards isolationism.

Trump's America First policy is expected to curtail costly overseas military involvement, press allies to share security burdens, and tackle U.S. trade deficits. He pledged to overhaul America's trade system, aiming to protect American workers and families by imposing tariffs on foreign countries. This aligns with his campaign proposals to implement tariffs on imports and notably on Chinese goods.

The president signaled intentions to reclaim the Panama Canal, criticizing alleged unfair treatment of American ships, and announced plans to rename the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America. He envisioned a "growing" America, expanding wealth, territory, and influence, even aspiring to send astronauts to Mars.

In his commitment to "make America great again," Trump promised decisive action to restore hope, prosperity, and peace for all citizens. He announced plans for executive orders addressing border security and energy policy, including declaring a national energy emergency and withdrawing from the Paris Climate Accord.

Trump's inauguration marks him as the oldest U.S. president and the second to serve non-consecutive terms after Grover Cleveland. The ceremony, initially set for the Capitol's West Front, was moved indoors due to cold weather, a rare occurrence last seen in Reagan's second term in 1985.
