Tokyo: Japan issued tsunami advisories for the Pacific coast of Hokkaido, Aomori, Iwate, and Miyagi prefectures, spanning from northern to northeastern Japan, following another offshore earthquake that affected the regions late Friday morning.
According to Philippines News Agency, the earthquake, which struck around 11:44 a.m., had an estimated magnitude of 6.7. It recorded a seismic intensity of 4 in areas including Hokkaido’s Hakodate, Aomori’s Hachinohe, and Iwate’s Morioka, as well as some other locations, as reported by the Japan Meteorological Agency. The intensity was the sixth-highest level on Japan’s 10-point scale.
The quake’s epicenter, believed to be approximately 20 kilometers deep, was located near the site of a 7.5-magnitude earthquake that occurred on Monday. That earlier tremor had affected Aomori, Hokkaido, and other prefectures and resulted in tsunami waves.
In response to Monday’s event, the agency issued a subsequent quake advisory, warning of the possibility of another quake off the Hokkaido and Sanriku regions from northern to northeastern Japan. This advisory is set to remain active until the end of Monday.
