Manila: The Philippine government is considering entering into several new agreements with the United Kingdom ahead of the 80th anniversary of their bilateral relations in 2026, as stated by the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA).
According to Philippines News Agency, the DFA announced in a press release that the proposed deals include memoranda of understanding in areas such as trade and investments, maritime, defense, and Information and Communications Technology. These agreements are anticipated to be finalized this year, in preparation for the commemorative celebration of the 80th anniversary of Philippine-UK relations.
During the 2nd Philippines-UK Strategic Dialogue held in London on February 3, DFA Undersecretary for Bilateral Relations and ASEAN Affairs Ma. Theresa Lazaro and UK Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State (Indo-Pacific) Catherine West MP highlighted upcoming milestones in the bilateral relationship, with a focus on the agreements soon to be signed.
Both delegations also expressed anticipation for the conclusion of the Joint Framework Agreement, which is scheduled to be signed in March. In their discussions, West and Lazaro also shared perspectives on regional and international issues, with Lazaro expressing appreciation for the UK's support in advancing the rule of law in the Indo-Pacific region.
The Strategic Dialogue is a result of the Philippines-UK Enhanced Partnership, which was officially launched in November 2021. Since its inception, the two countries have conducted thematic meetings in five strategic areas of cooperation, known as the 'pillars' of the partnership. These include political affairs, defense, maritime, economic and trade, and climate and environment.
