Gaza: The United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) has warned that Gaza, where Israel continues its genocidal war, is facing a severe food crisis that could get worse.
According to Philippines News Agency, UNICEF spokesperson Tess Ingram highlighted the dire situation in an interview with Anadolu, stating that malnutrition rates among children are extremely high, with families struggling to secure sufficient food and water. Ingram noted that around 15 to 20 percent of children screened in Gaza are malnourished, a figure that surpasses emergency thresholds. Alarmingly, more than 110 children have reportedly died from hunger, with over half of these deaths occurring this year.
Ingram emphasized that no area in Gaza is safe due to ongoing bombardments and that the current humanitarian aid is insufficient. She detailed her visits to malnutrition clinics in Gaza City, where the high rates of child malnutrition were evident. "There is a risk that more children will be killed from starvation if the situation doesn't change," she warned, stressing the urgency of the crisis.
The spokesperson called for immediate intervention to prevent further child fatalities, stating that the famine is a result of man-made decisions and is therefore preventable. She urged for the necessary aid to be delivered to save children's lives, emphasizing that a ceasefire would be the most effective solution. However, in the absence of a ceasefire, she advocated for the opening of all crossings and the delivery of substantial aid to the Gaza Strip under safe and efficient conditions.
The ongoing conflict has resulted in the Israeli army killing more than 63,600 Palestinians in Gaza since October 2023, further exacerbating the humanitarian crisis.
