Village Officials Urged to Maintain Neutrality During Election Season

Baguio City: The president of the Association of Barangay Councils (ABC) has called on fellow officials to treat all political aspirants fairly and remain apolitical to protect their constituents after the May 12 elections. "We should remain non-partisan. We do not know who will win. And what if the underdog wins, then that could cause animosity," stated Councilor Rocky Aliping, Baguio City ABC federation president, during an interview.

According to Philippines News Agency, Aliping emphasized that this stance aligns with the advisory issued by the Department of the Interior and Local Government. His appeal comes in response to some officials refusing to distribute the Commission on Elections' (Comelec) Voters Information Sheets (VIS).

Aliping noted that some officials expressed concerns about being asked by different political aspirants to insert campaign materials with the VIS. "If they agree to one, then they should agree to all, otherwise they might be branded as a non-supporter of that candidate they refused, which later on can cause a problem if that politician wins," he explained.

Furthermore, the official highlighted that while Comelec permits village officials to campaign for political candidates, they cannot request monetary considerations or funding for any village project.
