Visayas: The yellow alert status for the Visayas grid, initially set to last between 6 p.m. and 7 p.m. on Friday, has been lifted earlier than expected. The National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) announced that the alert was lifted at 1 p.m.
According to Philippines News Agency, the alert status was removed as the expected peak demand decreased to approximately 2,170 megawatts (MW) from the initial estimate of 2,453 MW. The current available capacity stands at around 2,522 MW, which is slightly lower than the previously reported 2,682 MW. A yellow alert status is typically issued when the available capacity is insufficient to meet the grid's contingency requirements.
The yellow alert was initially declared by the NGCP due to the unavailability of units 1 and 2 of Therma Visayas Inc., and the forced outage of unit 1 of the 82-megawatt Cebu Energy Development Corporation, all attributed to the grid operating and maintenance program (GOMP). GOMP refers to unplanned outages that occur outside the maintenance schedule approved by the Department of Energy.
These unavailable generating units, in conjunction with the reduced capacities of 20 other power plants and forced outages affecting around 20 additional plants, contributed to a substantial decline of approximately 763.5 MW for the grid, as reported by the NGCP.
