Widow of Electrocuted Lineman Receives PHP1.2-M Compensation from DOLE

Sorsogon: The Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) announced that it has released PHP1.2 million in compensation to the widow of a lineman who tragically died from electrocution while on duty.

According to Philippines News Agency, DOLE 5 (Bicol) Director Imelda Gatinao stated that the widow, Maricar (not her real name), was granted PHP1,224,985.28. This amount covers cash benefits, insurance claims, and separation pay provided by the Social Security System's Employees' Compensation Commission (SSS-ECC).

Gatinao emphasized that the compensation was a result of a comprehensive investigation into Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) and General Labor Standards (GLS) violations by the employer. She highlighted the importance of compliance with labor and safety standards, expressing gratitude to labor inspectors for their diligent work.

Gatinao stressed the significance of enforcing occupational safety and health standards to prevent such tragic incidents. Maricar expressed her gratitude to DOLE for the financial support, which she stated would help her secure her family's future and continue the education of her three children.

The DOLE investigation revealed safety protocol lapses that contributed to the lineman's fatal accident. These findings led to immediate actions to hold the employer accountable and enforce compliance with labor standards, alongside implementing corrective measures to avert future incidents.

With DOLE-Sorsogon's mediation, mandatory settlement conferences were conducted, leading to the resolution of claims and the disbursement of financial benefits.
