Wilma Accelerates Towards Eastern Visayas for Saturday Landfall

Manila: Tropical Depression Wilma has slightly accelerated and is forecasted to make landfall over Eastern Visayas on Saturday, as reported by the weather bureau. According to Philippines News Agency, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) stated that as of 5 a.m., the center of Wilma was positioned 70 kilometers east of Borongan City, Eastern Samar. The tropical depression is carrying maximum sustained winds of 45 kilometers per hour near the center, with gustiness reaching up to 55 kilometers per hour, and is moving westward at 15 kilometers per hour. Wilma is expected to continue its westward movement for most of the forecast period, potentially making its initial landfall over Eastern Visayas. Following this, it will traverse the Visayas until Sunday and then emerge over the Sulu Sea, with a possible passage over northern Palawan by Monday morning. Throughout its journey over the Visayas and Southern Luzon, Wilma is likely to remain as a tropical depres sion. Tropical Wind Signal No. 1 has been issued in several regions. In Luzon, it covers Sorsogon; Masbate, including Ticao and Burias Islands; Romblon; parts of Oriental and Occidental Mindoro; and the northernmost parts of Palawan. In the Visayas, Signal No. 1 is in effect for Northern Samar, Eastern Samar, Samar, Biliran, Leyte, and several other areas. It also affects regions in Mindanao such as Surigao del Norte and Dinagat Islands. PAGASA forecasts that Wilma will bring rains with gusty winds to the Visayas, Romblon, Masbate, and other affected areas. The shear line is expected to cause scattered rains and isolated thunderstorms over the rest of the Bicol Region and parts of Mindoro and Marinduque. There is a risk of flash floods and landslides due to moderate to heavy, and at times intense, rains. Additional regions like the Zamboanga Peninsula and Northern Mindanao will experience scattered rains and thunderstorms due to Wilma's influence, while the northeast monsoon will cause rain in Cagayan Vall ey, the Cordillera region, and Aurora. Other parts of the country will see partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated light rains. Strong to gale wind conditions and rough to very rough coastal waters will be experienced in Northern Luzon and the eastern sections of Central and Southern Luzon. Moderate to strong winds and moderate to rough seas are expected in the western section of Mindanao, the rest of Luzon, and the rest of the Visayas, while the rest of Mindanao will have moderate winds and moderate seas.
