Negros oriental: A woman lost her life and several others were impacted following severe flooding in certain towns of Negros Oriental over the weekend. The flooding was caused by extreme weather conditions that led to moderate to heavy rainfall, authorities reported on Monday.

According to Philippines News Agency, Capt. Stephen Polinar, spokesperson for the Negros Oriental Police Provincial Office (NOrPPO), identified the deceased as a 58-year-old resident of Sitio Bay-ang in Barangay Tabon, Vallehermoso. Her body was discovered in a sugarcane field in Sitio Bay-ang at approximately 5:50 p.m. on Saturday, as confirmed by village councilor Randy Cadorna.

Investigations revealed that the victim attempted to cross a creek to join her husband, who had gone ahead to secure their livestock. Unfortunately, she was swept away by the strong floodwaters and sustained multiple injuries after being struck by large rocks.

Adrian Sedillo, head of the Negros Oriental Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (DRRMO), reported that local government units observed flooding and minor landslides from Friday to Sunday. This was attributed to heavy and sometimes persistent rainfall induced by the shear line.

A DRRMO report submitted to the Office of the Governor detailed additional flooding incidents in Bindoy, Manjuyod, and Tayasan. Landslides also occurred in Sitio Nagabuto, Barangay Nagabulod in Bindoy, and Barangay Ulay and Tagbino in Vallehermoso, rendering spillways and roads temporarily impassable.

Furthermore, some regions experienced water and power outages. Sedillo mentioned they are awaiting more information regarding flood control infrastructure damage and the total number of affected residents.
