Working Students Propel Employment Surge in McDonald’s Philippines

Manila: Accommodation and food service activities recorded the highest increase in employment rate in June, according to the latest Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) data. The number may very well include working students, who make up 70 percent of McDonald's Philippines' 75,000-strong workforce, with flexible scheduling helping them manage work alongside their studies.

According to Philippines News Agency, around 4,000 crew members graduate from college each year, showcasing the company's support for educational advancement. Employees across all levels have access to training and development programs, and in 2024, the company invested PHP84 million in upskilling its people. Together, these opportunities give employees different ways to grow-whether it's earning a degree, building new skills, or turning a personal passion into something more.

This August, McDonald's Philippines kicks off the next chapter of Crew-ators, its employee creator program, with 12 crew members from Cebu leading the newest batch. Through six months of training, mentorship, creator tools, and incentives, they will have the opportunity to grow as content creators while serving as the brand's official employee ambassadors.

PSA data in June showed the number of employed Filipinos went up to 50.66 million from 49.63 million in May. Results of the latest Labor Force survey showed this was higher than the 50.47 million employed in June 2025. The employment rate during the month was at 95.1 percent. Industries that recorded the largest increase in employment are accommodation and food service activities (+481,000), administrative support service activities (+456,000), public administration and defense (+440,000), education (+354,000), and arts, entertainment, and recreation (+168,000).

The PSA also reported an increase in the country's labor force participation rate-65.1 percent, which is higher than the 63.8 percent seen in May. This is equivalent to 53.25 million Filipinos aged 15 years and older who are part of the active labor force.

Crew-ators is one of the ways McDonald's helps its people unlock their 'best me' by creating opportunities to explore their interests, develop new skills, and build confidence beyond their day-to-day roles. 'Our people are more than the roles they perform every day. They're students, artists, athletes, creators, and individuals with unique aspirations,' Ben Marasigan, McDonald's Philippines vice president for Human Capital Group, said in a news release. 'At McDonald's, we believe our responsibility goes beyond providing a job. We want to create opportunities for our people to grow, discover their potential, and become the best version of themselves. Crew-ators reflects that commitment by giving our restaurant teams the space to pursue their passions, develop new skills, and build capabilities that will serve them both in their careers and in life.'
