Visayas: The Visayas grid remains under red alert for the fourth consecutive day, while the Mindanao grid is under a yellow alert due to high demand and limited capacity caused by the unavailability of several power plants.

According to Philippines News Agency, the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGPC) stated that the red alert for the Visayas grid is scheduled from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., with yellow alerts from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. and from 8 p.m. to 9 p.m. The available capacity in the Visayas grid stands at approximately 2,283 megawatts (MW), providing a limited operating margin against the contingency requirement, as peak demand is projected to reach 2,360MW, necessitating the yellow alert.

The insufficient available capacity to meet consumer demand and the grid's regulating requirement has led to the issuance of the red alert. The power supply is constrained due to the ongoing forced outage of Units 1 and 2 of Therma Visayas Inc. and Unit 1 of the Cebu Energy Development Corporation. Additionally, power imported from Mindanao is inadequate because of the maintenance outage of Unit 2 of the coal-fired GNPower Kauswagan in Lanao del Norte and the emergency shutdown of GNPK 1 due to a boiler tube leak.

NGCP reported that six power plants are on forced outage this August alone, with more than 20 others having been unavailable since 2021. Furthermore, 13 power plants are operating at derated capacities, reducing the grid's supply by approximately 903.2MW.

For the Mindanao grid, the yellow alert is in effect from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m., 12 noon to 4 p.m., and 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. The available capacity is around 2,785MW, while peak demand is projected to hit 2,604MW. NGCP noted that 16 power plants are on forced outage this month alone, in addition to the 12 others that have not been operating since last year and the eight others on derated capacities, resulting in a total loss of approximately 713.7MW.
