Manila: Malaca±ang on Tuesday warned that the planned 'zero remittance week' by certain groups of overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) supporting detained former president Rodrigo Duterte could have repercussions beyond the government.
According to Philippines News Agency, in a press briefing, Presidential Communications Undersecretary and Palace Press Officer Claire Castro appealed for calm after groups like Maisug Croatia in Europe revealed plans for a week-long remittance stoppage in protest of the arrest of Duterte by the Interpol and his subsequent imprisonment in The Hague, Netherlands.
Castro stated that the government was merely enforcing the law by allowing the arrest of Duterte, who faces crimes against humanity charges before the International Criminal Court (ICC) for his war on drugs. Castro urged the public to remain calm and to understand that the government's actions are in accordance with the law.
The Palace official also mentioned that some Filipinos who were victims of Duterte's drug war are seeking justice. Castro called for fairness and calm in the actions taken by those supporting the remittance stoppage.
While emphasizing the importance of peaceful dialogue, Castro highlighted the potential broader impact of the remittance halt, particularly on families dependent on financial support from their loved ones abroad. She noted that stopping remittances would affect not only the government but also the families of the OFWs who rely on the financial support.
