Suspected New People’s Army (NPA) rebels shot dead a member of the Citizen Armed Force Geographical Unit (CAFGU) in Barangay Puting Bato, Cabadbaran City, Agusan del Norte on Sept. 9.

Cabadbaran City Police station chief, Lt. Col. Renel Serrano, identified the victim as Benie Boy Bohoy, 21, a resident of the said village.

“We received a cellular phone call on Thursday informing of the shooting incident in Barangay Puting Bato,” Serrano told the Philippine News Agency on Friday.

The victim was assigned to the 29th Infantry Battalion of the Army.

Initial investigation disclosed that Bohoy, accompanied by a nephew, was gathering firewood when four suspected NPA rebels arrived and confronted the victim.

“The armed men grabbed the cellphone of Bohoy and ordered his nephew, who was a minor, to immediately leave,” Serrano said.

After browsing through his phone, the armed men shot Bohoy several times.

The victim died on the spot while the perpetrators immediately left.

“The nephew of the victim told our investigators that he immediately walked away from his uncle, as ordered by the armed men. Then he heard several gunshots. He did not return because of fear,” Serrano said.
