10-MW Battery Storage System Installed at Negros Geothermal Site

Valencia: First Gen-Energy Development Corporation has successfully installed a 10-megawatt battery energy storage system at its geothermal power plant in Valencia, Negros Oriental. This development aims to provide backup power during periods of peak demand.

According to Philippines News Agency, Erwin Magallanes, head of the company's Corporate Relations Division, mentioned on Monday that the facility is fully completed and is now awaiting operational clearance from the Energy Regulatory Commission. Magallanes described the system as "a series of batteries, like a huge power bank," designed to enhance the power supply, particularly during peak hours when demand is elevated.

The battery energy storage system (BESS) operates by capturing excess renewable energy when supply levels are high and storing it in lithium-ion batteries. This stored energy can then be released during outages or high-demand periods to maintain grid stability. Notably, this system operates independently from the site's existing 222.5-megawatt geothermal power plants. First Gen-EDC has implemented similar battery storage solutions at other power plant locations across the nation.

Magallanes emphasized that the installation of the battery storage system underscores the company's dedication to delivering consistent, clean, and renewable energy solutions.
