PANGASINAN: The Pangasinan police took a decisive step in ensuring public safety by destroying 1,381 illegal firecrackers and pyrotechnics, along with 238 loud mufflers, confiscated over the holiday season. The crackdown, which ran from December 21 to 29, aimed to minimize the risks associated with these hazardous items during New Year's Eve celebrations.
According to Philippines News Agency, the illegal firecrackers included 848 standard types and 533 boga, an improvised cannon noted by the Department of Health-Ilocos Region (DOH-1) as the primary cause of fireworks-related injuries. The DOH-1 reported a concerning increase in such injuries, with 37 incidents recorded in Pangasinan from December 21 to 29, marking a 48 percent rise compared to the previous year.
Pangasinan Police Provincial Office Director Col. Rollyfer Capoquian emphasized the ongoing efforts to inspect and monitor illegal firecracker activities. "I have given directives to the police stations to further strengthen inspection against illegal firecrackers to ensure the safety of the people," he stated. He also urged residents to consider safer alternatives to traditional firecrackers, highlighting the importance of public safety and health.
In anticipation of public gatherings, especially at beaches following New Year's Eve, Capoquian mentioned the activation of the Task Force Baywalk to safeguard beachgoers. Since December 16, the Pangasinan Police Provincial Office has established 103 police assistance desks throughout the province to manage the busy Christmas season effectively.
