17 Asylum Seekers Benefit from Outreach Activities at NAIA

Manila: Seventeen asylum seekers temporarily staying at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) benefited from outreach activities prepared by government agencies, the airport regulator announced on Friday.

According to Philippines News Agency, the activity was led by the Department of Justice (DOJ) in observance of National Refugee Day, as reported by the Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA). MIAA's Medical Division provided essential health services, including physical examinations, electrocardiogram screenings, and blood sugar tests for asylum seekers from Burundi and Pakistan on June 17.

On Friday, the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) contributed to the outreach activity by distributing food packs and hygiene kits to the asylum seekers at Terminals 1 and 3. 'MIAA was proud to take part in the national observance of Refugee Day by extending concrete assistance to those who have sought refuge in our country,' MIAA General Manager Eric Jose Ines stated in a news release.

The celebration of National Refugee Day is mandated under Presidential Proclamation No. 265, s. 2023, and is observed annually to recognize and strengthen the Philippines' longstanding humanitarian tradition and its commitment to the protection of refugees.
