3-Day Transport Strike Ends Peacefully, Says PNP

Manila: The three-day transport strike led by the transport group Manibela concluded peacefully on Wednesday, with no untoward incidents recorded across the country, according to acting Philippine National Police (PNP) chief, Lt. Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr.

According to Philippines News Agency, Nartatez stated, "The situation was generally peaceful and manageable. Our police units continue to maintain visibility in key transport terminals and major routes to ensure the safety of commuters and the smooth flow of traffic. Sa pangkalahatan, naging maayos at tahimik ang sitwasyon sa mga lugar na apektado ng transport strike (Overall, the situation in areas affected by the transport strike was orderly and peaceful)."

Police forces were tasked with ensuring the strike's security, following President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.'s directive to guarantee the unhampered mobility of the public and maintain peace and order during legitimate protest actions.

The transport strike, which began on October 13, occurred in Quezon City and the provinces of Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal, and Quezon. The group expressed concerns over the steep fines imposed on public utility vehicle (PUV) workers.

The PNP collaborated with the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board, Metropolitan Manila Development Authority, Department of Transportation, and local government units to monitor affected routes and assist commuters throughout the strike.

"I commend our men and women on the ground for ensuring that peace and order were upheld without any confrontation or escalation. This demonstrates our commitment to upholding both public safety and the people's right to peaceful assembly," Nartatez added.

Nartatez further reminded transport groups that while the PNP respects their right to express grievances, all protest actions must be conducted peacefully and within the bounds of the law.

'Nananawagan tayo sa lahat na patuloy na makipagtulungan at pairalin ang disiplina at respeto sa batas. Ang ating tungkulin ay mapanatili ang kapayapaan at seguridad ng bawat mamamayan (We call on everyone to continue to cooperate and enforce discipline and respect for the law. Our duty is to maintain the peace and security of every citizen)," he said.

As normal operations resumed, Nartatez assured the public that the PNP remains on alert and ready to respond to any situation that may affect public order and safety.
