Manila: Thirty-five individuals, including 33 women from Carmen, Surigao del Sur, have successfully graduated from the inaugural welding skills training program conducted by the Department of Social Welfare and Development-Caraga Region (DSWD-13). This initiative was part of the Kapit-Bisig Laban sa Kahirapan-Comprehensive and Integrated Delivery of Social Services (KALAHI-CIDSS) program.
According to Philippines News Agency, the 34-day training, supported by a budget of PHP1.6 million, provided participants with welding toolkits and certificates upon completion. The program was designed to equip individuals with technical skills in the welding field, traditionally dominated by men, while fostering economic empowerment and promoting gender inclusivity.
The DSWD-13 highlighted that this initiative represents a shift in the focus of the KALAHI-CIDSS program, moving beyond infrastructure development to emphasize human capital. The program underscores a commitment to community-driven development that is inclusive and participatory.
Among the graduates was 24-year-old Leonor, who expressed her gratitude for the training and the opportunities it unveiled. "Learning welding gave me the confidence and skills to pursue a decent job and help support my family. I'm deeply thankful to the government and DSWD for believing in our potential," Leonor stated in an interview.
Rolando Villacorta Jr., Deputy National Program Manager for Operations of KALAHI-CIDSS, encouraged the graduates to actively apply their newly acquired skills. He also urged them to form an organization to sustain opportunities and access further support. "The impact of this project will echo in your work, your communities, and in future generations," Villacorta remarked.
