33,000 Police Officers Set to Vote Early in Local Absentee Voting: PNP

Quezon City: Around 33,000 policemen are expected to vote in the local absentee voting (LAV) ahead of the May 12 midterm polls, the Philippine National Police (PNP) announced Monday. PNP Chief Gen. Rommel Francisco Marbil cast his vote at the opening of the LAV in Camp Crame, Quezon City, underscoring the importance of participating in the democratic process, even for law enforcers.

According to Philippines News Agency, Gen. Marbil emphasized that voting is both a right and a duty, reflecting the officers' commitment to the nation. He assured the public of the PNP's preparedness to secure the upcoming elections, with personnel, mobility assets, and logistical resources already in place. The LAV, which runs until Wednesday, allows police officers, soldiers, media workers, and other frontline government workers to vote ahead of time, ensuring their participation in the democratic process.

Gen. Marbil stated, "We are ready to ensure that every Filipino can vote in safety and peace. We will intensify checkpoints, chokepoints, and patrol operations to prevent any disruptions." The Commission on Elections (Comelec) has enlisted police officers to secure the elections nationwide, conducting checkpoints, operations against loose guns, private armed groups, and vote-buying. Some police personnel have been trained for election duties should any election workers be unable to report due to threats or security issues.

As of the latest security assessment, 34 areas across the country are categorized under red in terms of election threats. Gen. Marbil reaffirmed the PNP's commitment to safeguarding the electoral process, emphasizing the preservation of its sanctity and integrity. The PNP also pledged support for the Comelec's anti-vote buying initiative, urging public vigilance against such activities.

Meanwhile, the Philippine Army (PA) announced that approximately 15,842 soldiers are expected to cast their ballots during the LAV at the Army headquarters in Fort Bonifacio, Taguig City, and other major camps nationwide. PA spokesperson Col. Louie Dema-ala reminded soldiers to remain non-partisan, while PA chief Lt. Gen Roy Galido emphasized the Army's role in supporting the PNP and Comelec to ensure a successful democratic exercise.

The Comelec has approved a total of 57,689 LAV voters, including 29,030 Armed Forces personnel, 23,448 policemen, 4,206 government employees, and 1,005 media members. The Army assured the public of its commitment to non-partisanship and professionalism, focusing on safeguarding national security and maintaining stability during the election period.
