37 Pangasinan LGUs Suspend Classes Amid Flooding

Pangasinan: Thirty-seven of Pangasinan's 48 local government units (LGUs) suspended classes on Monday morning due to bad weather and flooding.

According to Philippines News Agency, the Pangasinan Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO) reported that eight LGUs ordered the cancellation of classes from pre-school to senior high school, two from pre-school to elementary, while the remaining LGUs suspended classes at all levels.

PDRRMO assistant head Avenix Arenas said in an interview that the decision to suspend classes was left to the discretion of LGUs, depending on the situation in their respective localities. Arenas noted that Dagupan City, along with the towns of Calasiao, Sta. Barbara, Lingayen, and Mangatarem, are experiencing flooding in some areas, with the highest floodwater level recorded at 2.5 feet.

"It is expected since the rain is still continuous and rainwater from the uplands is now flowing down," Arenas said. As of 11 a.m. Monday, monitoring indicates that the Marusay River in Calasiao is at a critical level. The Sinocalan River, Agno/Ba±aga River, Balingcaguing River, and Bued/Cayanga River are all above normal levels, while the Pantal River remains normal.

Arenas added that Pangasinan remains under blue alert status. "We are still monitoring the flooded areas, and assessment for damages to agriculture, infrastructure, and livestock is ongoing," she said. No casualties have been reported so far.
