48MW Nasipit Hybrid Energy Storage System Begins Construction in Agusan del Norte

Agusan del Norte: Construction of the 48-megawatt Nasipit Hybrid Energy Storage System in Agusan del Norte has commenced, with completion anticipated to enhance grid stability by the second quarter of next year.

According to Philippines News Agency, Therma Marine, Inc. (TMI), a subsidiary of Aboitiz Power Corp., initiated the groundbreaking on Monday for the battery energy storage system (BESS) project. This system is set to be integrated into TMI's oil-fired TMI Mobile 2 in Lawis, Sta. Ana. BESS technology utilizes batteries to store surplus power, releasing it when necessary to support the grid's power supply.

Ronaldo Ramos, AboitizPower Transition Business Group's chief operating officer for operated assets, expressed that the Nasipit BESS project, once completed, will significantly contribute to grid stability and support the increasing incorporation of renewable energy into the grid. Ramos described it as a smart solution for evolving energy needs.

AboitizPower has prior experience with the BESS model, having pioneered a hybrid BESS in its TMI Mobile 1 in Maco, Davao de Oro three years ago. The combination of oil-fired power plants and BESS technology plays a vital role in providing fast, responsive power to balance supply and demand as an ancillary service. These ancillary services are essential to maintaining a reliable and stable power system.

Data from the Department of Energy indicates that the country currently has a total committed BESS capacity of 480 MW this year, with an additional 134 MW anticipated by 2026.
