Manila: The Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) is set to enhance the existing free WIFI coverage in Metro Rail Transit Line 3 (MRT-3) stations while also adopting cashless fare payments and improving security measures to boost rail line services.
According to Philippines News Agency, DICT Secretary Henry Aguda announced that the enhanced free WiFi will be rolled out across all MRT-3 stations, with a long-term objective to expand the coverage to include WiFi access inside the trains. Aguda emphasized that DICT is collaborating with major telecommunications providers to increase bandwidth and improve coverage in critical transit zones. These improvements will involve the installation of in-station fiber networks and an upgrade of signal infrastructure.
Aguda stated that the initial upgrades will be visible to the public within the next month, with continued improvements in internet speed expected in the following months. The expansion of the free WIFI program to Light Rail Transit Line 1 (LRT-1) and Line 2 (LRT-2) is currently under consideration, making MRT-3 the pilot project for broader digital transformation across the country's major train lines.
In addition to enhancing free WiFi, DICT and the Department of Transportation (DOTr) are working together to implement contactless fare payments using credit and debit cards, e-wallets, and smartphones. The DICT is also exploring the use of artificial intelligence (AI)-powered security screening systems to expedite safety checks.
Aguda remarked that by strengthening inter-agency partnerships and focusing on people-first digital solutions, DICT and DOTr aim to make commutes more efficient and dignified, transforming daily train rides into positive experiences. On Monday, Aguda and DOTr Secretary Vince Dizon conducted an inspection of MRT-3 stations and trains, from North Avenue Station to Santolan-Annapolis Station, where they engaged with passengers to gather feedback and suggestions for enhancing commuter experiences.
