Kabankalan city: Thirty college graduates whose families benefited from the Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program (4Ps) are set to serve as tutors for young learners in Kabankalan City this summer. Under the Tara, Basa! Tutoring Program, conducted in partnership with the Department of Education, these graduates will assist children from Grades 1 to 3 in public elementary schools within their local communities from May 11 to 29.
According to Philippines News Agency, John Aldrin Mana-ay, project development officer and city link of DSWD-Negros Island Region, stated that the tutors are recent graduates, primarily holding degrees in Education. "They were selected from the pool of graduates over the past two years, with a focus on those who majored in Education," he noted.
The initiative aims to provide young learners with the guidance and support necessary to enhance their reading and foundational skills, thereby boosting their confidence and preparing them for the upcoming school year. Each participating tutor will receive an honorarium of PHP5,000 from the city government as part of their engagement.
The Tara, Basa! Tutoring Program represents a reformed educational assistance initiative by the DSWD. It provides financial support to families and empowers the youth by engaging them in active roles in nation-building. Launched in August 2023 and expanded in 2024, the program trains and assigns college students or graduates as tutors to assist disadvantaged or struggling readers in public elementary schools.
