Manila: The Samahang Weightlifting ng Pilipinas (SWP) announced its roster for the 3rd Asian Youth Games (AYG) scheduled from October 22 to 31 in Bahrain. The team comprises six talented weightlifters: Jhodie Peralta, Princess Jay Ann Diaz, Alexsandra Ann Diaz, and Jay-r Colonia from Zamboanga City, Jerick Icon Castro from Angono, Rizal, and Dave Angelo Pacaldo from Bohol, who are set to compete in the tournament for athletes aged 14 to 17.
According to Philippines News Agency, SWP President Monico Puentevella will lead the team, which also includes coaches Gregorio Colonia, Patrick Lee, Allen Jayfrus Diaz, and Kelle Kay Rojas. Notably, three of these weightlifters recently demonstrated their prowess at the Asian Youth and Junior Weightlifting Championships in Astana, Kazakhstan. Peralta earned three silvers in the Youth category and two bronzes in the Junior women's 53 kg. category, Princess Ann Diaz secured one silver and two bronzes in the Youth women's 44 kg. category, and Alexsandra Ann Diaz achieved one silver and one bronze in the Youth women's 48 kg. category.
Coach Allen Jayfrus Diaz expressed optimism about the team's prospects, stating, "I think they have a chance to win medals in Bahrain." He has been instrumental in training his daughter Princess, niece Ann, and Jhodie since their early years. "They are in good condition. We will be coming to Manila on August 20 to continue our preparation," added Diaz, who is also a first cousin of Hidilyn Diaz, the Philippines' first Olympic gold medalist.
Weightlifting is one of 34 sports featured in the event organized by the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA). The tournament also serves as a qualifier for the 2027 Youth Olympic Games in Dakar, Senegal.
