NCSC Pushes Alzheimer’s Awareness and Employment Programs for Elderly

Manila: The National Commission of Senior Citizens (NCSC) is ramping up efforts to promote Alzheimer's and dementia awareness while expanding employment and livelihood opportunities for older Filipinos, especially those without pensions.

According to Philippines News Agency, NCSC Chairperson and Chief Executive Officer Dr. Mary Jean Loreche announced plans to meet with doctors from the Philippine General Hospital and members of the Alzheimer's Disease Association of the Philippines. This meeting aims to coordinate a national intervention program for Alzheimer's awareness, starting with education and public campaigns.

Dr. Loreche emphasized the importance of mental wellness and social connection for the elderly, addressing issues of isolation, depression, and anxiety. The NCSC is promoting 'social prescribing' in community-based care centers to foster interaction among seniors and younger generations.

In addressing employment for non-pensioned seniors, Loreche detailed collaborations with the National Institutes of Health and the Institute on Aging to finalize medical guidelines ensuring age-appropriate reemployment opportunities. The NCSC has partnered with TESDA and the Department of Tourism to provide skills training based on regional interests, with a particular focus on agribusiness.

The Commission is also preparing seniors in Kidapawan City for fruit preservation enterprises and has received applications for tourism-related training. Loreche noted that legislative reforms are needed for senior citizen hiring and benefits, but in the meantime, the NCSC is coordinating with LGUs and the private sector for temporary support.

Loreche also discussed working with policymakers to extend the working age and coordinating with Comelec to propose expanded voting privileges for seniors, including accessibility improvements at polling sites.

Assuring government support, Loreche highlighted initiatives like the expanded centenarian cash gift and participation in the 'Trabaho para sa Bayan' program, aligning with President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.'s eight-point agenda for senior welfare and inclusion.
