Gunma: A multiple collision involving 67 vehicles occurred on the Kan-Etsu Expressway in Gunma Prefecture, eastern Japan, resulting in two fatalities and 26 injuries.
According to Philippines News Agency, the accident took place around 7:30 p.m. on Friday near the expressway's Minakami Interchange in the town of Minakami, Gunma. The prefecture's expressway traffic police unit believes the vehicles skidded due to a frozen road surface.
The two individuals who lost their lives have been identified. One was Miyuki Wakita, 77, from Chofu, Tokyo, who was seated in the back of a car driven by a family member. The other victim was discovered in the driver's seat of a truck on Saturday morning.
The collision occurred on a gentle left curve of the expressway. A large truck collided with a midsize truck that had stopped sideways, leading to a series of crashes involving subsequent vehicles in a 300-meter-long section of the road. The chain-reaction crash resulted in a fire that engulfed and damaged a total of 20 vehicles.
