Manila: This highly urbanized city received 200 handheld metal detectors from private donors for the use of 75 public elementary and high schools to strengthen campus security measures. On Tuesday, Mayor Greg Gasataya turned over the scanning devices to Department of Education (DepEd) Bacolod City Schools Division Superintendent Dennis Develos, in the presence of Bacolod City Police Office (BCPO) Director Col. Eugenio Rebadomia at the City Mayor's Office.
According to Philippines News Agency, Mayor Gasataya discussed the importance of enhancing public school safety in Bacolod, emphasizing both police visibility and the protection of students through thorough inspections. He expressed gratitude towards private groups and individuals who contributed the handheld metal detectors, noting that the decision on the distribution of these devices to each school will be made by DepEd-Bacolod City.
Since last month, the Bacolod City National High School has been utilizing metal detectors during inspections at its entrance gate, setting a precedent for other institutions. Gasataya also mentioned plans for the city government to procure additional security equipment, particularly walk-through metal detectors, which are deemed necessary for certain schools.
The DepEd has already recommended the number of walk-through scanners required and identified suitable schools for their installation. The city is currently preparing the purchase request and funding requirements, pending the specifications for these devices.
Superintendent Develos highlighted that the handheld metal detectors will play a crucial role in bolstering security across public schools in the city. He remarked that these devices would not only serve as deterrents but also enhance the efficiency of the inspection process at school entrances.
Following a tragic shooting incident at the San Jose National High School in Tacloban City last month, the DepEd has intensified security measures in schools throughout the country. The BCPO has also been conducting simulation exercises for active shooting incidents in various public schools as part of efforts to ensure campus safety.
The Philippine National Police has instructed local police offices and units to collaborate with the DepEd in organizing active shooter drills across all schools nationwide.
