Manila: Eight Filipino crew members of the MV Eternity C, which was attacked by Houthi rebels off the coast of Yemen, have safely returned home, reuniting with their families, while efforts continue to locate the 13 crew members who remain missing.
According to Philippines News Agency, the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) welcomed the returning seafarers at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) Terminal 1. They arrived on a Saudi Airlines flight, marking a bittersweet moment as the country holds out hope for the safe return of the others.
The MV Eternity C, a Greek-flagged vessel, was struck by missiles in two separate attacks in July, leading to its eventual sinking. The incident involved 22 crew members, 21 of whom are Filipinos. The government, alongside the shipowner, continues to search for the missing crew, with ongoing efforts involving the maritime industry and passing ships in the area.
Reports indicate some crew members may be held by Houthi forces. However, Migrant Workers Secretary Hans Leo Cacdac refrained from confirming these details due to security concerns. Efforts by the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) and diplomatic partners are ongoing to ensure the crew's safety.
The DFA remains engaged with neighboring countries to assist in locating the missing crew. Although the exact number of casualties or captives is unconfirmed, there is cautious optimism about the well-being of the missing crew members.
The eight repatriated seafarers will receive financial aid and support from various government agencies to aid in their recovery and reintegration. This includes monetary assistance, medical support, and skills training to help them rebuild their lives.
Initial investigations revealed that the MV Eternity C violated regulations by not submitting mandatory risk assessments or securing armed escorts while navigating the Red Sea. As a result, the ship's manning agency has been placed under preventive suspension.
Despite the ordeal, the returning seafarers displayed resilience and strength, with emotional reunions marking their return. The Filipino spirit of fortitude and determination was evident as they rejoined their families, showcasing the enduring courage of Filipino seafarers.
