PWD Achievers, Advocates Recognized at 2nd People’s Legacy Awards

Quezon city: Media personalities, government officials, and community advocates were honored Thursday during the 2nd People's Legacy Awards and PWD Film Festival at the QCX Business Center in Quezon City. The event recognized outstanding individuals and groups for their contributions to governance, media, inclusion, and grassroots development, particularly those supporting persons with disabilities (PWDs).

According to Philippines News Agency, among this year's honorees were Office of the Special Assistant to the President for Investment and Economic Affairs Undersecretary Joee Guilas and Philippine News Agency Headlines anchor William Thio. Guilas remarked on the importance of legacy over achievement, emphasizing the motivation that can be derived from overcoming disabilities. "Let us not allow our disabilities to hinder us from achieving our goals. Instead, let us use that as our motivation to achieve more and to achieve greater," he stated.

People's Legacy Awards founder Richard Hinola highlighted the significance of the recognition program as a tribute to the PWD sector, which has historically been overlooked. He expressed satisfaction that the sector is finally receiving the honor it deserves, noting that many awardees have quietly contributed to their communities. "Karamihan naman po in their own little way nakatulong sa community (Most of them, in their own little way, helped the community). We are very glad to honor these people para maging good role models sila sa komunidad (so they can become good role models in the community)," he added.

The event also featured the Persons with Digitabilities International Film Festival, Expo, Seminar, and Workshop Awards, now in its fifth year. Festival director Crisaldo Pablo described the event as a comprehensive initiative to enhance awareness of disabilities and wellness. He noted that the initiative is largely driven by PWDs, many of whom are scholars receiving free training in filmmaking, storytelling, and event management. "So, this is like their graduation project every year," Pablo explained.

During the weeklong festival, five short films were showcased, highlighting the diverse talents and stories within the PWD community.
