Manila: A nine-hour red alert is in effect for the Visayas grid starting 1 p.m. to 10 p.m. Wednesday, while an eight-hour yellow alert is in effect for Mindanao from 1 p.m. to 9 p.m. According to Philippines News Agency, the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) stated that a yellow alert is also in place for the Visayas grid from 10 p.m. to 11 p.m., as available capacity stood at around 2,124 megawatts (MW) while peak demand is expected to reach 2,555MW.

The unavailability of Unit 1 of Therma Visayas Inc. (TVI) and Unit 3 of the Panay Energy Development Corporation (PEDC), as well as the outage of TVI Unit 2 during the day and low electricity imports from Mindanao, are the primary factors behind the red alert in the Visayas. NGCP reported that 11 power plants in the Visayas are unavailable this month alone, while more than 20 have been out of service since 2024, and 11 plants are operating on derated capacities. This has resulted in the loss of around 982.6MW.

For the Mindanao grid, available capacity is around 2,731MW while peak demand is expected to hit 2,600MW. The forced outage of Units 2 and 3 of the GNPower Kauswagan is the major factor for the yellow alert in the Mindanao grid during the day. NGCP indicated that 13 power plants in Mindanao are not working this month alone, and 16 others have been in forced outage since 2024, while six plants are operating on derated capacity. These have reduced capacity by around 769.7MW.

The transmission grid operator issues a yellow alert when a grid's operating market is short against contingency requirement, while a red alert is issued when capacity is not enough to meet consumer demand and the grid's regulating requirement.
