Cebu: Former Interior and Local Government Secretary Benhur Abalos has expressed his opposition to the Supreme Court's decision allowing commercial fishing in municipal waters, a move that could potentially displace around two million fishers if implemented.

According to Philippines News Agency, Abalos spoke during the convention of the Liga ng mga Barangay of Cebu, emphasizing that the 15-kilometer zone from the coastline, designated by the Philippine Fisheries Code for small fishers, is crucial for their daily sustenance. "It has been there for more than 20 years. It will affect at least two million of our fisherfolk and their family. You could just imagine the impact here," Abalos noted.

Aside from the livelihood impact, Abalos highlighted the potential adverse effects on marine biodiversity and sustainable fisheries management. As a senatorial candidate for Alyansa Para sa Bagong Pilipinas, he assured full support for the cause of small fishers.

Addressing approximately 8,000 barangay officials of Cebu at the Iloilo Convention Center, Abalos pledged to push for legislation to comprehensively address the issue if elected to the Senate. He also called on local government units to add their voices to the petitions and motions for reconsideration against the Supreme Court decision.
