Manila: Senate President Francis Escudero and Senator Aquilino Pimentel III have expressed their support for the Department of Justice's (DOJ) proposed review and amendment of cyber laws aimed at combating misinformation and fake news, particularly in light of the increasing prevalence of artificial intelligence (AI)-generated content.

According to Philippines News Agency, Escudero emphasized the importance of regularly updating laws to address emerging challenges. He stated that he is ready to consider the DOJ's proposals to amend existing legislation to fight fake news, acknowledging that no law is perfect or timeless. Escudero noted that any amendments would undergo the usual legislative process.

Pimentel also highlighted the public's rising concerns regarding the spread of disinformation, especially content driven by AI. He expressed willingness to consider legislative proposals that would penalize the dissemination of fake news but stressed the importance of balancing these measures with constitutional rights, such as free speech and access to information. Pimentel suggested the possibility of defining new crimes related to the spread of fake news, acknowledging the challenges posed by this evolving phenomenon.

Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin Remulla previously announced that the DOJ is evaluating existing cyberlibel laws and other cyber-related legislation to determine if amendments are needed to effectively curb the spread of false information. Remulla underscored the detrimental impact of misinformation on society and affirmed the DOJ's commitment to pursuing legal action against those who intentionally disseminate false information.
